YYC to Downtown Calgary: Bus, Taxi, Rideshare or Private Driver

By PrimeKar Team · November 4, 2026

The short answer

There is no train from Calgary International Airport (YYC) to downtown. You have six ways in: the Route 500 express bus, a taxi from the stand, an airport sedan, Uber or Lyft, a rental car, or a private driver booked ahead. For one person with a small bag in the daytime, the bus or a taxi is hard to beat. For a late arrival, a group, a lot of luggage or a meeting you cannot be late for, a driver booked ahead removes the guesswork. This guide is written by PrimeKar, a private driver service, so read it with that in mind. We have tried to be straight about where the other options win.

Route 500 Airport Express bus

Calgary Transit's Route 500 is an express bus between YYC and downtown via Centre Street, with limited stops. It used to be Route 300. Calgary Transit renamed it in August 2026 and says the routing and service levels did not change. From the domestic terminal, cross the roadway at Door 2 toward Pillar 7. From the international terminal, exit Door 15 on the Arrivals level and cross toward Pillar 32. Ticket machines at the stops take debit, credit or cash, and the 7-Eleven on Arrivals near Door 11 sells tickets too. Calgary Transit lists the 2026 adult single fare at $4.00. It is the cheapest way downtown by a wide margin. The trade-off is a fixed route and stops, so check where it lets you off against where you are staying.

Taxi from the stand

Taxis wait at stands on the Arrivals level at Doors 1, 9 and 15. You do not need to book. Fares are metered, and YYC lists the current estimate to downtown on its taxis and sedans page. A taxi takes 4 or 5 adults, and vans are available for extra luggage. YYC lists Associated Cab and Checker Cabs as wheelchair accessible. For a straightforward daytime arrival, a taxi is quick, simple and door to door.

Airport sedan

Airport sedans are available on demand on the Arrivals level, beside the taxi stands at Doors 2, 11 and 15. YYC lists a flat rate to downtown on its taxis and sedans page. Like a taxi, there is nothing to book. It is a step up in vehicle for the same walk-up convenience.

Uber or Lyft

Uber and Lyft are the only ride-share apps authorized at YYC. You meet your driver on the Arrivals level by Doors 3, 12 or 15, and at peak times also on Departures at Doors 5 and 11. Your app tells you which zone to use. Rideshare works well if you already use the app and your timing is flexible. The thing to know is that the car is found after you land, not before, so late at night or at a busy moment you are finding out what is available while you stand at the curb.

Rental car

YYC says more than a dozen rental companies operate just outside the terminal. A rental makes sense if you are heading on to the mountains or will be driving a lot during your stay. For a trip that is only downtown and back, remember that downtown hotels and offices often charge for parking, and you are the one driving after a flight.

Hotel shuttles are for airport hotels

Several hotels near the airport run courtesy shuttles. They pick up on the Arrivals level, across from the terminal. For Bus Bays 16 and 17, exit from Door 4. For Bus Bay 37, exit from Door 16. You request one from the courtesy phone. YYC describes these as airport hotels, so do not count on a free shuttle to a downtown hotel. Ask your hotel directly.

Private driver booked ahead

A private driver is the one option that is arranged before you land. If you add your flight number, PrimeKar tracks your inbound flight, so the pickup follows your actual landing time. You get 45 minutes of complimentary wait from that moment. Without a flight number, the wait counts from your scheduled pickup time. You agree the curbside meeting point with your driver by call or message when you are ready. PrimeKar Executive takes up to 4 passengers and about 3 suitcases. Elite XL takes up to 6 and about 4. In the app you see your price before you confirm, and the app needs about two hours' lead time. If you would rather not use the app, PrimeKar can arrange it for you, and assisted bookings are coordinated by phone, text or WhatsApp.

When we would tell you to take the bus or a taxi

If you are travelling alone or as a couple, with carry-on bags, landing in the daytime, and staying near the bus route, take Route 500. It costs a few dollars. If you want door to door with no planning, walk to the taxi stand. Neither needs booking, and for a short trip into the city that is a real advantage. We would rather say that plainly than pretend every arrival needs a booked car.

When a driver booked ahead earns its cost

Book ahead when the timing matters or the arrival is awkward. A late-night or very early landing. An international arrival where customs time is hard to predict. A family with children and a lot of bags. A group of four to six travelling together. A business arrival with a meeting soon after landing, where you want to step out and get in without queueing or checking an app. It also makes sense if downtown is only the first stop and you are going on to Canmore, Banff or Lake Louise later, because the same booking works for the mountain trip.

How to choose in one paragraph

Cheapest: Route 500. Simplest with no booking: a taxi or airport sedan from the stand. Already in the app and flexible: Uber or Lyft. Driving on to the mountains: a rental, or a private transfer if you would rather not drive. Late, early, with a group, with luggage, or on a schedule that cannot slip: book a private driver ahead and add your flight number.
