Why the numbers online disagree

Most of the spread comes from three things. Some distance calculators report the straight-line distance rather than the road distance. Some measure from downtown Calgary and others from Calgary International Airport, which sits on the northeast side of the city. And for Jasper, the two official sources measure to different points: Parks Canada says 404 km, Tourism Jasper says 412 km. Neither is wrong. When you plan, use the figure that matches your actual starting point, and add time for stops, traffic and weather.

Parks Canada, Travelling the Icefields Parkway Expect long grades of 8 to 11% near Bow Lake and on Sunwapta Pass. Parks Canada, Jasper: Getting here

Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles. Visitors reach the lake by Parks Canada shuttle, transit or a commercial operator. For 2026, Parks Canada lists the shuttle season as May 15 to October 12. Parks Canada, Lake Louise and Moraine Lake FAQ
